Magic mushrooms in Portland: legal sessions and the new city ordinance
Portland is the easiest place in the country to take psilocybin legally. It has more licensed service centers than any other city in Oregon's directory, and in September 2026 the City Council made personal use of natural psychedelics the police's lowest priority. Buying mushrooms outside a licensed center is still illegal.

Legal psilocybin sessions in Portland
Under Oregon's Measure 109 program, adults 21 and older can take psilocybin at a licensed service center with a licensed facilitator, with no prescription. You'll do a preparation session at least a day ahead, the administration session on site, and an optional integration session afterward. A 2026 study of Oregon centers found a median price of about $1,900 per session. Our Oregon guide explains the full process.
These Portland service centers were listed in the Oregon Health Authority's licensee directory in October 2026:
- 7 Gates Sanctuary (Neuromycology)
- Chariot
- Fernlove
- Immersive Therapies
- Meadow
- MindTrek (Asimov Corporation)
- Rose Waters Sanctuary
- Space Clinic
Listing isn't an endorsement, and some licensed centers aren't in the directory. Check a center's license with OHA before booking.
Portland's 2026 psychedelics ordinance
On September 30, 2026, the Portland City Council unanimously passed the Psychedelic Health and Safety Act (Ordinance 2026-186). It makes personal use, cultivation and non-commercial sharing of naturally occurring psychedelics, such as psilocybin mushrooms, the lowest enforcement priority for Portland police. Peyote is excluded. One report gives an effective date of October 30, 2026.
The ordinance doesn't change state law. Since September 1, 2024, possessing psilocybin outside the licensed system has been a misdemeanor statewide, and selling outside the program is still a crime. Multnomah County deputies, state police and federal officers aren't bound by a city ordinance. Read our story on the vote.
Be careful with "mushroom" edibles sold in Portland
When Oregon State University researchers bought 12 "magic mushroom" edibles in Portland and tested them, none contained psilocybin. Instead they found undisclosed ingredients including caffeine, kava and hemp extracts and synthetic psychedelics. Licensed service centers use tested psilocybin products; unlicensed shops don't. Read our guide to fake mushroom products.
Who comes to Portland for psilocybin
Oregon's own data shows the program draws heavily from out of state: in the second quarter of 2026, about two-thirds of clients in the state's county data came from outside Oregon, and Multnomah County residents accounted for roughly 95 to 125 clients each quarter. If you're coming from Seattle or California, budget for the preparation session at least 24 hours before your administration session.

Frequently asked questions
Are magic mushrooms legal in Portland?
You can legally take psilocybin at a licensed service center if you're 21 or older. Outside those centers, possession is a misdemeanor under Oregon law, though Portland's September 2026 ordinance makes personal use the police's lowest priority. Selling outside the licensed program is illegal.
How many psilocybin service centers are in Portland?
Eight of the 20 service centers in Oregon's licensee directory were in Portland in October 2026, more than any other city. Statewide, a 2026 study counted 22 active centers.
Can I buy magic mushrooms in Portland to take home?
No. Oregon's program requires you to consume psilocybin at the service center during a supervised session. No licensed business can sell mushrooms to take home, and the mushroom edibles sold in some Portland shops have been found to contain no psilocybin.
Does Portland's new ordinance legalize psilocybin?
No. It tells Portland police to treat personal use, growing and non-commercial sharing of natural psychedelics as their lowest priority. State law, which makes possession outside licensed centers a misdemeanor, still applies, and sales remain illegal.
